We are supposed to write a story, something funny that we shared together. Since Saturday I’ve been thinking about all of our times, the many things we’ve experienced and laughed so hard about. From our love of Will and Grace to fierce guard kids doing remarkable things. It’s hard to pinpoint a story and so I won’t….instead it’s a list of stories of times that we shared. That way I don’t have to write too much in print and incriminate ourselves☺.
Of course the biggest one is the lady crocheting and shushing us at DCI finals….to this day I still feel bad that we disrupted her concentration, the time you and Nathan came up to see me in Spartanburg…we spent a great day at the river, the many times I came in for guard camp, Julie Wright’s wedding and the club afterwards….oh Jorge, our shared affection for all things Nate Morris…..he is just the sweetest, the retellings of my nights at Swinging
Richards…..do you remember the midget????, do you remember helping me make my tape for Blast??? We watched it over and over, those were some good catches, the laughs over how ridiculous headquarters can be at WGI….everyone always looking for someone else, the countless conversations over god only knows what now on the phone, the ups and downs of being a band director, discussing the latest gossip in the band world, sharing stories about my day and my Spartanburg kids……I am so glad they got a chance to meet you, us laughing about Alfred and his ways…I think you got away with a lot from him, but I think he knew it and let you because……well….you are you. I thought I would be writing this for your birthday, man I had some good stuff planned for that.
Michelle, I’m just so glad that you are my friend. I remember the first time I ever saw you and knew who you were. It was the April Cadets camp in 2003. Jeff had signed back up to write the drill and you came with him to teach the guard. I thought you looked like Lauren West. I remember you had long hair and I talked to you about seeing
Lassiter at the Carolina Regional that year. We honestly didn’t talk much after that, I remember how funny you were that summer teaching us everything from being a better performer…you told me I had Disney face I. WAS.
MORTIFIED…..teaching us the H20 cheer….our team was red hot, helping us learn to hear what April was really trying to say amidst all the F words flying out of her mouth! It wasn’t until 2005 that I think we really became friends. I came on tour posing as a volunteer for the food truck and then hung out with the guard staff the rest of the time. Remember Disney world that year???? It rained…you got soaked and you were bullshit!!!! I remember one night we stayed up talking late into the night on a bus ride to somewhere, not talking about anything much just
everything I guess. I think that’s when we really hit it off and became friends.
Your unwavering support has always meant so much to me, I always enjoyed any chance I got to see you whether it was working with you at Lassiter or just hanging out. I felt like we were of the same mindset, growing up on a farm, getting into this crazy thing of drum corps, and I always enjoyed our time together. I read in a story once that there is a belief that the people you meet in this lifetime are souls that you’ve meet before in a previous life, and every new life you meet those same souls again, more than ever I really hope that’s true. Our time in this life was way too short. Thank you for befriending me, thank you for all the times you were there for me, thank you for the laughs, thank you for the love, thank you for your outlook even amidst the worst news. I am so lucky to have met you.
I love you and miss you so much.
Until we meet again my dear friend………
